Project Description

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is a new idea that envisions a sustainable, economic, and accessible air transportation system for emergency management, freight delivery, and passenger mobility inside or across a metropolitan region. However, safety is the most difficult factor hindering UAM development and public acceptability, and no standard UAM safety evaluation approach has been devised so far.

This PhD studentship will try to propose creative ways to address the problem of UAM safety while accounting for intrinsic uncertainties such as urban air turbulence and the non-linear effects of manufacturing defects. The project will build on an existing rotorcraft flight dynamics model (written in C++) and use cutting-edge aerodynamics modeling technologies and the multi-agent modeling technique to increase simulation feasibility, particularly in dangerous conditions. The study will also develop a quantitative safety evaluation technique that uses an advanced inverse simulation algorithm and an uncertainty quantification approach.

The project offers the candidate an exciting chance to create breakthrough technologies, including aerodynamics, flight dynamics, and autonomous systems. It also aids the applicant in establishing collaborative relationships with academia, industry, and airworthiness authorities in order to create unique aviation safety solutions for next-generation VTOL (Vertical-TakeOff-and-Landing) aircraft.
